Capsules, 2019-2023

Capsules emerged from a text written by Lyndon Barrois Jr. during a residency in the winter of 2019 in the geographically isolated location of  Fogo Island, Canada. The video’s themes reflect on the remote nature of the island, which at times felt extraterrestrial, and as if unmarked by human intervention. Later, during the summer of 2021, LAB-D employed their 11-year old nephew to voice the essay, resulting in the tender voiceover of a child reciting contemplative musings about space and time. This audio was subsequently paired with footage Addoley Dzegede had captured in 2019 of the landscape and built environment in various sites around the Island. Given the references to science fiction, and vintage product advertisements featuring astronauts, the mature thoughts expressed in an adolescent voice play on a confusion of chronology, and attempt to account for marks and intersections across time.
